Performance Practice as Research: Exploring ‘Building -scapes’

BUILDING -SCAPES

“Building -scapes” is an innovative performance-practice-as-research endeavour that delves into the interplay of somatic, sonic, and cyclical processes within a technologically mediated space. Through an immersive fusion of sound and movement, this project fosters encounters with others, facilitating intimate sharing and exploration of collaborative social-ecological systems. In our current socio-economic-political landscape, such practices are vital to creating fertile ground for meaningful connections and cooperation.

Creation: The Performance Experience

Conceived as a site-specific experience, “Building -scapes” involves performers engaging in real-time sound composition while interacting with the environment in the presence of the audience. This instantaneous “feedback-response” process reveals the delicate and intimate relationship between humans, their surroundings, and technology. To join the performance, the audience scans a QR code on their mobile devices to access an audio streaming event.
From the moment the audience steps into the performance space, they become integral to the unfolding narrative. Through movement and live sound composition, the performers present fragmented materials that leave space for individual associations and personal interpretations. Each member of the audience listens to the performance through headphones, while the architectural, sensorial, and kinaesthetic aspects of the space continuously evolve, deconstruct, and reassemble.
The performers explore a diverse range of motions and vocal sounds, playing with prosody and responding to the environment, the audience’s presence, and the current socio-political and environmental landscape. Their exploration encompasses micro and macro events, from bodily sensations to memories, and from environmental issues to political concerns. A writer observes and responds to the unfolding events by crafting storytelling projected within the space, allowing a flow of independent thoughts and associations.
Throughout the performance, the text, soundscape, and movement sometimes collide, creating intriguing contrasts, while at other times, they harmoniously complement each other. The audience receives the soundscape with a slight delay due to the nature of the audio live-stream event, further enhancing the dream-like and virtual qualities of the experience without relying on virtual equipment. This unique assemblage of structured and spontaneous “happenings,” experienced intimately through headphones, produces a subtle misalignment between sight and sound, expectation, and familiarity, generating a space for free associations. In this performance, the world becomes a playground and a mirror of our projections and expectations.
“Building -scapes” is a captivating performance-practice-as-research project that transcends conventional boundaries, inviting participants to explore the interwoven fabric of sound, movement, and human interaction in a dynamically shifting space of thought-provoking encounters.

To listen is to enter in the spatiality by which, at the same time, I am penetrated. To be listening is to be inside as well as outside, to open from without and from within, hence from one to the other as from one in the other. It creates a condition as such: sharing an inside/outside, division and participation, de-connection and contagion. (Listening, Jean Luc Nancy & Mandell, 2007, p.14)

STILL POURING SAND – A Moving Testimonial of Venice’s High-tide Tragedy

“Still Pouring Sand” is a poignant creation that combines personal and found footage to revisit the traumatic High-tide that engulfed Venice on November 12th, 2019. Through this artistic testimony, the film becomes a deeply resonant and personal experience, skilfully crafted using archive footage and the creator’s own visuals and soundscape. This short video was expertly edited under the mentorship of Becky Edmunds as part of the Dance and the Moving Image Module during the MFA Creative Practice program at the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
The archives used in this masterpiece were retrieved from Istituto Luce, offering glimpses of Venezia’s historical “acqua alta” events, including the exceptionally high tide that struck on November 19-12, 2019, reaching a staggering 187cm. Amidst the relentless downpour, sirens wailed through the city, earning it the evocative title, “La città delle sirene” by Giovanni Pellegrini. Within this emotional piece, Laura Colomban serves as both performer and visionary behind the concept and editing, capturing the essence of the tragedy.
A heartfelt acknowledgement extends to the invaluable contributions of Becky Edmunds, Alice Gale-Feeny, and Michaela Gerussi, whose support and guidance made this touching project possible.

FRACTURES

Experience “Fractures”, a captivating site-specific work created during a Residency at TraiArt in Parma, Italy. This artistic masterpiece beautifully reflects the current moment of global crisis and fragmentation. As a response to the recent tragic explosion in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, “Fractures” connects deeply with the collective experiences of our time, including the devastating impact of the pandemic.

The performance features a powerful soundscape composed of voices recorded after the fateful explosion that shook Beirut on 4 August 2020. The explosion, caused by a massive amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the city’s port, resulted in over 210 fatalities and left 7,500 people injured.
“Fractures” has garnered well-deserved recognition, being selected as a finalist at Hangartfest in Pesaro, Italy. Laura Colomban, the visionary behind this emotional concept, delivers an unforgettable performance that delves into the heart of human suffering and resilience.

Experience the powerful convergence of art, tragedy, and hope through “Fractures,” with Laura Colomban as the performer, Elisa Russo capturing the evocative visuals, Giovanni Fiamminghi handling the editing, and audio files retrieved from Instagram accounts @lebanontimes and @Ilovebeirut. TRACEABLE NO FURTHER

Unveiling the Unseen: Exploring the Art of Rehearsal in Contemporary Theatre
Discover the hidden essence of the stage, concealed behind veils of secrecy and political significance. In a thought-provoking conversation with Simonsen, B. (Ed.) in “The Art of Rehearsal: Conversations with Contemporary Theatre-Makers” (Bloomsbury Methuen Drama, 2017), the enigmatic nature of the performing arts unfolds. Delving into the depths of this mystical realm, we find that hidden truths and unspoken emotions emerge like a flourishing forest, waiting to be exposed.

Ridout N. (2006) further captures the essence of the physical act of disappearance on stage, where the focus or non-focus of gaze and the interplay of movement and stillness embody this vanishing act. The disappeared characters cannot be traced any further, symbolising the profound impact of their absence.

Within this theatrical dance of shadows, lies a profound political implication that beckons our attention. The unmarked condition prompts reflection on the deeper layers of meaning embedded in the performance.

This mesmerising performance has been meticulously crafted under the guidance of Zoi Dimitriou, during the MFA Creative Practice at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. The soundscape, an integral part of this unforgettable experience, was created during the Banff Residency by the talented Philippe Melanson and Daniel Pencer.

Don’t miss the opportunity to witness this captivating act, performed by the talented Laura Colomban, a remarkable artist of the MFA Creative Practice Dance Professional Pathways 2019/2021 program. Join us as we venture into the unknown and embrace the profound beauty of the unseen.

NEUMA

“NEU MA” An Innovative Interactive Live Act with Real-Time Control-Based Research”
NEU MA is an extraordinary movement and research project that revolves around the concept of an Interactive Live Act. At its core, this innovative performance utilises the breath as its main sound material while also serving as a unique control interface. By dynamically influencing specific parameters of the software, including intensity and spectral components (timbre), the breath takes centre stage in shaping the experience.

In this spectacle, cutting-edge software performs real-time analysis on the breath’s sound, amplifying and processing it in accordance with the composer’s creative instructions. The choreography beautifully harmonises the connection and interrelation between the breath and the software, allowing movement to organically arise from the sound it generates, transcending mere aesthetic components. Even the lighting gracefully synchronises with the breath data, further enhancing the immersive experience.

NEU MA is a collaborative endeavour featuring talented choreographer and performer, Laura Colomban, alongside interaction and sound design expert, Giovanni Dinello. This groundbreaking project has garnered esteemed partnerships with V.E.R-V. (Venice Electroacoustic Rendez-Vous) and BURBB (Biennale Urbana).

Experience where technology and artistry unite to create an unforgettable, interactive journey that redefines the boundaries of live performances. Witness the fusion of breath, movement, and software in a symphony of creativity and innovation. Join us as we celebrate this unique expression of human potential and the harmonious convergence of technology and art.

Anna and Lawrence Halprin: the RSVP cycle

Laura Colomban

Abstract The RSVP cycle represented a point of reference for Anna Halprin, for the realization of her mission: to make everyone dance, regardless of their training in dance, age and ability. In fact, the inclusion of as many people as possible in the world of dance has always been an essential aspect for her, who in the encounter with the different has recognized a way to enrich her own “personal landscape”, through a transversal work dimension without cultural, historical or geographical boundaries. To make this dynamic inclusive, he therefore sought a methodology for the realization of collective works that was based on a common language and that would allow to overcome the idea and preconceptions about gender, social and cultural stratification, sex, age , the artistic technique, the race, the type of individual training. The RSVP cycle is the tool and the outcome of this research.

Breath, Intimacy and Interactivity

Atem Tonus Ton Practice in training and in Performance
Laura Colomban

Abstract During the practice of listening to the breath, what is sought is the “present” condition, free from expectations and the temptation to control, induce, force, to leave room for the perception and listening of the movement of the breath. It speaks of itself, and of us, in an unequivocal way, assuming the role of a traveling companion, manifesting the dialogue between body, mind and spirit. Being present, letting it happen, bringing attention: this attitude towards the breath leads to vitalize the body-mind system, oxygenate the cells and stimulate or relax the nervous system. How do you find this space in movement and in the performing arts?
